From the makers of Bestival, Common People returns to Southampton Common this weekend, treating festival-goers to a world-class line-up and the usual Bestival antics. Here’s 5 reasons why you have to grab yourself a ticket and be there…
Pete Tong Presents Ibiza Classics Performed by The Heritage Orchestra Conducted by Jules Buckley
Blimey… that band name is a mouthful! It doesn’t, however, do them justice. Ibiza anthems are pretty epic anyway, but get an orchestra to play them alongside one of the UK’s finest DJ’s, and you have a spectacle. Expect an 80 minute set packed with right proper tunes, including Faithless’ Insomnia, Fatboy Slim’s Right Here, Right Now and Moby’s Go.
The World’s Biggest Bouncy Castle
This installation went viral last year and it’s easy to see why. It’s all well and good seeing it in pictures, but even I was blown away by its scale. If you’re looking for comparisons, it’s taller than the Great Wall of China and its turrets equal the height of Cardiff Castle- if you’ve been two either of those two places.
The Uncommon Stage Presented by The Joiners
We love a good up and coming band here and the Uncommon Stage at Common People is literally a haven for it. Alongside some of Southampton and the surrounding area’s finest rising stars lies more established acts in the form of Beans On Toast, Blaenavon and Black Honey, for you to discover your new favourite band. Hats off to local venue The Joiners for programming it- you’ve outdone yourselves!
Elvana: Elvis Fronted Nirvana
Alright, I admit, I don’t know a lot about this act, but who can’t be intrigued by an Elvis fronted Nirvana tribute. At first I thought, “Surely this can’t work?”, then I remembered this was a Bestival event, so I’m prepared to be surprised. Head on over to the Common Stage at 2.45pm on the Saturday to see what they’re all about.
Fair play, festival food can be pretty expensive and I can’t imagine Common People being too dissimilar- but there’s certainly a lot of choice for your hard-earned cash. A quick trip over to their website and I see that there’s duck wraps, a cheese company, an Indian kitchen and Caribbean foods- I could go on. I’m going to give a shout out to the wonderful people at Pie & Vinyl, though: they do a mean steak and ale.
Common People 2017 will see headline performances from Pete Tong Presents Ibiza Classics Performed by the Heritage Orchestra and Sean Paul, as well as Tom Odell, Groove Armada (DJ Set), Wild Beasts, Loyle Carner and many more. For the full, current line-up, please see here.
